On 23 July 2023, I posted on my Facebook of my intention to attempt Mount Kilimanjaro (5895m) in June 2024. I would be 43 years old by then. About 10 friends expressed interest and contacted me for more details. Many of them have yet to attempt 3000m-ish mountains and were seriously considering whether to attempt Kilimanjaro. At about the same time, there was a report of a Singaporean who died of acute altitude sickness on The Straits Times on 13 Aug 2023 (see link below) which has served as a reminder to all high altitude trekking enthusiast in Singapore to seriously consider the risk involved in pursuing such endeavors.

As of today, 14 Feb 2024, 2 of my friends and I have decided to embark on this once-in-a-lifetime trekking experience to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. We will most likely be joined by at least 4 others climbers elsewhere in the world arranged by our Operator.

I will be documenting in my blog the steps we took in our preparation phase, taking safety precautions as our top priority as well as the actual 8-day journey on the Lemosho route.

I hope that my blog entries can help future climbers / trekkers in your preparations especially if you are residing in a non-mountainous country like Singapore and has led most of your life around the Sea level. Because to us, the attitude gain is literally about +5800m and our bodies are not naturally accustomed to high attitude living.

Here is the extract of my Facebook post on 23 July 2023:

I will be making an attempt to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5895m) next year between 5 June 2024 - 19 June 2024.

It will be an 8-day expedition on this route called Lemosho with a starting altitude of 2200m. There is no guesthouse along the way so the team of porters will be carrying with them the kitchen, toilet and tents for us throughout the climb.

This is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest peak in the African Continent. (Probably the highest peak I will ever attempt in my life).

The current plan is to arrive at Nairobe Jomo Kenyatta Airport of Kenya on 6 June 2024 to meet the local guides and the climb will commence on 7 June 2024.

So far 2 of my friends are keen to join me in this expedition and we are forming a team of max 10 people.

If any friends are keen on joining, please PM me 😊

If you have ever attempted (or going to attempt) Mount KK (4095m), Mount Jade (3952m), Everest BC (5364m) or other 4000m-ish mountain, you might want to consider joining us on this once in a life time experience in Africa.

It is not so much about fitness level for such climb, it is more about whether your body has been tested on high attitude and whether your body can adapt.

Training is required. Mainly to carry 9kg backpack and walk up and down stairways and do trekking consistently to build the muscle group. Running and jogging stamina is less important.

This Lemosho route has very good high altitude acclimatization profile thus the average success rate is about 80% on this route.

Death rate on this mountain is 0.03%.

Temperature at summit is about -10 degree

Temperature at the base is about 25 degree
