What are my ‘Biological Defences’ in Nepal and India?
18 Oct 2019 / Linus Lin
Just taken some essential vaccinations as a 'biological defence' for my upcoming adventure to Nepal and India. I heard the cheapest way is to do it in a polyclinic and fastest way at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Went for the cheapest way naturally but the queue is long.. had to book 2 - 3 months in advance but it's cheaper by about 25% so quite worth the wait.
These are some things I learnt:
Hep B vaccination is also recommended but the doctor said that it is spread by sexual intercourse with the local or infected needle or blood related procedure. So we can skip it if we are sure we won't get involve 🙂
Hep A and Typhoid is spread by water. So it's essential.
Tetanus is a must. But TDAP has a combination of Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis which are 3 life threatening diseases. Since it's claimable by Medisave, mind as well take all 3.
There is no known spread of Malaria in Nepal but there is in New Delhi. So it's better to get the preventive pills. Doctor says there isn't any vaccination for it. The way to prevent is to get pills and consume weekly before, during and after the trip. I need to get 8 tablets for a 3 week trip. Each tablet about $4.
Influenza vaccination is more for a peace of mind since it's airborne and droplets.
Prices I paid at polyclinic is in the image. If you know cheaper options please share! Advice most welcome!
Interestingly, Singapore is listed as Group H?! Didn't know our country so 'dangerous' to visit =)
Anyway better be safe than sorry.
Don't wanna fall sick in the middle of the Himalayas.
